Prince William and Catherine Middleton first met in 2001 while studying at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Prince William carried with him the engagement ring—a stunning 18-carat sapphire surrounded by fourteen diamonds which had previously belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales.Prince William asked Catherine to marry him in a manner she later said was “very romantic, and... very personal.”
